Which ad platform is best for an online store?
There isn't one universal answer — Meta, Google, and TikTok each reach shoppers differently, and each has a dedicated ecommerce ad tool built around your product catalog. Most growing stores end up using more than one.

How does each platform's ecommerce tool actually work?
| Platform | Tool | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Advantage+ Shopping | Automates design, audience, budget, and placement using machine learning, matching your catalog to likely buyers across Facebook and Instagram; you can set budget rules for new vs. existing customers |
| Performance Max for retail | Needs a Google Merchant Center product feed; runs across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, and Google Maps from one campaign | |
| TikTok | Video Shopping Ads | Requires a connected TikTok Shop; you pick "Sales" as the objective and TikTok Shop as the product source, adding up to 20 products per ad group |
So which one should I pick?
It depends on the buying moment you're targeting. Google's Performance Max reaches people actively searching to buy — high intent, but you're paying for demand that already exists. Meta's Advantage+ Shopping reaches people scrolling who weren't necessarily looking to buy yet — lower immediate intent, but a much bigger pool of potential customers, especially with strong product visuals. TikTok's Shop ads lean into discovery-driven, often impulse-style purchases from a younger, mobile-first audience.
What do they all need from me first?
All three need your product catalog connected properly — Merchant Center for Google, a synced catalog for Meta, a linked TikTok Shop for TikTok — before their automation can actually work. Get that foundation wrong and the smartest algorithm in the world won't save the campaign.
