How do I set up conversion tracking in Google Ads?
Google Ads measures conversions through the Google tag, Google Analytics, or both together — Google itself recommends the Google tag if you don't use Analytics or need Ads-specific features. The tag goes on every page of your site, plus a specific event snippet on the action you want to count, like a purchase or a form submission.

What are the two ways to track conversions?
- Google Analytics — if you already have GA4 linked, you can import conversions from it.
- Google tag — installed sitewide, with an extra conversion event fired on the exact action (a "Thank you" page, a button click). Google recommends this route if you're not using Analytics, or need conversion features specific to Ads.
What does installing it actually involve?
The base Google tag needs to run on every page. Then a conversion action is created in Google Ads for the specific thing you want to count, and its event snippet fires only when that action happens. Google notes it can take up to 48 hours for a new conversion action's status to update, so tracking that looks "empty" on day one isn't necessarily broken.
Why does tracking break or undercount?
The most common documented causes: the tag isn't correctly installed on the page (check with Google's Tag Assistant tool); in Google Tag Manager setups, the Conversion Linker tag is missing or misconfigured; for advertisers in the EEA, Consent Mode isn't configured correctly, which can silently create tracking gaps; and for offline conversion imports, the click ID (GCLID) has to be uploaded within 90 days of the click or it won't match.
