Digital Marketing

What does a digital marketer actually do day to day?

A digital marketer gets a business in front of the right people online and turns that attention into customers. Day to day, that means planning campaigns, running ads, making or briefing content, and checking the numbers to see what's working.

What does a typical week look like?

This is an illustrative week, not a fixed routine:

When Typical tasks
Start of the week Check last week's results, pause weak ads, move budget to what's working
Midweek Brief or make new creatives, write ad copy, schedule posts
Ongoing Answer comments and messages, coordinate with sales on new leads
End of the week Report results and plan next week's tests

What does the job description say?

O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor's occupation database, lists tasks for search marketing strategists that match much of this work, including:

  • Collecting and analysing web metrics such as visits, click-through rates, conversion rates, cost per acquisition and cost per click.
  • Optimising text, graphics and other digital assets for search and for display on different devices.
  • Taking part in building and running the online marketing strategy.
  • Tracking and reporting results to decision-makers.

If those metrics are new to you, our digital marketing glossary explains them in plain words.

What skills matter most?

  • Reading numbers. Knowing that a click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions, as Google Ads Help puts it, is the easy part. Knowing what to do when it drops is the job.
  • Writing and creative judgement. Ads, captions and landing pages all need clear words.
  • Testing. Trying one change at a time and keeping what works. See how to A/B test ads.
  • Platform know-how. Meta, Google, TikTok, Snapchat and analytics tools each work a bit differently.

Quick follow-ups

  • Not always. Many digital marketers brief designers and video makers instead of making everything themselves. What matters more is knowing what the creative needs to say and checking whether it worked.
