What is performance marketing?
Performance marketing is advertising judged on a measurable action rather than on exposure. You're not buying attention and hoping — you're buying sales, enquiries or bookings at a cost you've agreed in advance.

What makes it different from ordinary advertising?
| Ordinary advertising | Performance marketing |
|---|---|
| Paid for reach and awareness | Paid for a measured action |
| Judged on impressions | Judged on cost per result |
| Success is felt | Success is calculated |
| Budget set by habit | Budget set by what a result is worth |
What counts as a "performance"?
Whatever is genuinely valuable to you. Google Ads Help defines a conversion as "a specific customer activity that is valuable to your business" and lists website actions, app actions, phone calls and offline conversions as types. Meta's campaigns are similarly built around an objective chosen before launch.
That choice matters more than people expect: optimise for clicks and you'll get cheap clicks; optimise for purchases and you'll get fewer, more expensive clicks that actually buy.
What does it need to work?
- Tracking installed and tested before any spend
- A known value per result — otherwise no cost is "good"
- Enough volume to compare versions honestly
- Creative worth testing — Google Ads Help notes ad relevance and landing page quality feed into Ad Rank, so quality lowers cost
When is it the wrong tool?
When the product is genuinely unknown and nobody is searching for it yet, or when the sales cycle is so long that this month's spend shows up next quarter. Those need awareness alongside, not instead.
