What are keyword match types in Google Ads?

Keyword match types are the settings that tell Google Ads how closely a person's search has to relate to your keyword before your ad can show. There are three: broad match, phrase match and exact match.

What does each match type do?

Google Ads Help defines them by meaning, not by exact wording:

Match type How you write it What Google says it matches
Broad match keyword on its own: running shoes Searches "related to your keyword", even ones that don't contain its direct meaning
Phrase match in quotes: "running shoes" Searches that include the meaning of your keyword, including more specific versions
Exact match in brackets: [running shoes] Searches with "the same meaning or same intent" as the keyword

Google's own example for broad match: the keyword low carb diet plan could show for a search like carb free foods. For exact match, it explains that [skydiving license] would not match a broader search like skydiving courses.

Which one should I start with?

It's a trade-off between reach and control:

  • Broad match reaches the most searches, but you'll see more loosely related ones. It works best when conversion tracking is solid, so Google's bidding knows what a good click looks like.
  • Phrase match is a middle ground for most small budgets.
  • Exact match gives the tightest control, but the least volume.

Whatever you pick, check the search terms report regularly and block the irrelevant ones.

Do match types affect cost?

Indirectly. Looser matching can bring in clicks from people who were never going to buy, and every click costs money. Relevance also feeds into Quality Score, which Google uses in the auction explained in how Google Ads works. Good keyword research makes choosing match types much easier.

Quick follow-ups

  • Broad match. Google Ads Help says it needs no special symbols, so a keyword typed on its own is treated as broad match.
