How long does SEO take to work?
Usually months, not days. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months, and suggests waiting at least a few weeks before judging whether your work helped.

Why does it take so long?
Because several slow steps have to happen in order:
- Google has to find your pages. Google Search Central says it uses links to find new pages to crawl, so a brand-new page with no links pointing to it can sit unnoticed.
- Google has to index them. Being found isn't the same as being stored. Search Console Help says even requesting indexing doesn't guarantee a page will appear in the index.
- Your pages have to earn their place. Competing with sites that have covered your topic for years takes content, links and time.
The basics of how this works are in what SEO is and how it works.
What affects the timeline?
| Faster | Slower |
|---|---|
| Few competitors for your searches | Crowded, well-established topics |
| Clear, helpful pages on each topic | Thin or duplicate pages |
| Other sites linking to you | No links at all |
| A site with no technical problems | Pages blocked from crawling |
Should I trust someone who promises quick results?
No. Google Search Central's "Do you need an SEO?" page says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
What do I do while I wait?
Run ads. Search ads can show on Google as soon as they're approved, so you get enquiries now while SEO builds for later. See how Google Ads actually works. Most businesses run both, then spend less on ads as their organic traffic grows.
