How much budget do I need to start running Meta ads?

Meta's Business Help Center advises starting with at least $5 a day and letting the ad set run for more than six days. That is the floor for the system to work at all — not the amount that will grow your business.

Why doesn't a very small budget work?

Meta's delivery system learns who to show your ad to by watching what happens. With a tiny budget it gets very few results a day, so it never learns, and your cost per result stays high. Meta's guidance is explicit that a bigger starting budget and a longer run give the system the data it needs.

Two more things worth knowing about daily budgets:

  • Meta may spend up to 75% over your daily budget on a strong day
  • It averages out over the week, so you never pay more than seven times your daily budget in a week

How do I pick my real starting number?

Work backwards from money, not from what you can spare:

  1. What is one customer worth to you in profit?
  2. What share of that are you willing to pay to get one? That's your target cost per customer.
  3. Multiply by the number of customers you want this month.
  4. Divide by 30. That's your daily budget.

If that number is below $5 a day, the honest answer is that ads are not the right tool for you yet.

What else decides whether it's enough?

The result you ask for. A purchase costs far more per result than a click, so a budget that's fine for messages may be far too small for sales. See how to choose a campaign objective and how long to run a new ad before you judge the numbers.

Quick follow-ups

  • Technically yes, but Meta's own guidance is to start at $5 a day or more and run for more than six days, because its delivery system needs enough results to learn who to show your ad to.
