Marketing consultant or marketing agency: which one does my business need?

A marketing consultant mainly advises: they look at your business, set the direction and help you make decisions. A marketing agency usually plans and also does the hands-on work, like running ads and making content.

What's the difference in practice?

Marketing consultant Marketing agency
Main job Advice, strategy, reviews Strategy plus doing the work
Who executes You or your team The agency's team
Good when You have people to do the work but need direction You don't have the time or skills in-house
Typical setup Sessions or a short project Ongoing monthly work or a project

When does a consultant make more sense?

  • You already have someone posting or running ads, but results are flat and you're not sure why.
  • You need a digital marketing plan, budget split or goals before spending more.
  • You want an outside view on an agency you already pay.

When does an agency make more sense?

  • Nobody in your business has time to run campaigns every week.

  • You want one team accountable for delivery.

Whichever you choose, keep ownership

Meta's help centre explains that a business can share assets like Pages and ad accounts with a partner, and that only the owning business can share an asset with another business. Google Ads Help similarly lets you invite users at set access levels and remove them at any time. So set up accounts in your own name, then give access. If you go the agency route, read how to brief a marketing agency.
