What's the difference between marketing and advertising?
Marketing is every decision about who you sell to, what you offer, what you charge and how you're known. Advertising is one part of that: paying a platform to put your message in front of people. All advertising is marketing; most marketing isn't advertising.

What sits inside each?
| Marketing (the whole) | Advertising (the paid part) |
|---|---|
| Who the customer is | Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Google ads |
| What you sell and at what price | Sponsored posts and boosted content |
| What you're known for | Paid influencer posts |
| Your website, shop and service | Search ads and display banners |
| Free channels: SEO, content, word of mouth | Retargeting |
Why does the difference matter in practice?
Because it tells you where a problem actually is. If your ads get clicks but nobody buys, the ad did its job — the marketing decisions behind it (price, offer, page, audience) didn't. That's exactly the pattern described in why ads get clicks but no sales.
It also explains why better marketing makes advertising cheaper. Google Ads Help states that ad relevance and landing page quality feed into Ad Rank, so a clearer offer aimed at the right people lowers what you pay per click. Sharper thinking is a discount.
Where should the free part go?
Into the things that keep working after you stop paying: your Google Business Profile, your own content and the reputation behind it. Google Search Central's guidance rewards content that "provides original information, reporting, research, or analysis" rather than pages written for search engines.
