What is a conversion in digital marketing?

A conversion is a customer action you've decided is valuable — a purchase, a WhatsApp message, a booking, a call. Google Ads Help defines it as "a specific customer activity that is valuable to your business", and everything the platform does is aimed at producing more of whichever one you chose.

What kinds of conversions exist?

Google Ads Help lists four categories:

Type Examples
Website Purchases, sign-ups, form submissions
App Installs and in-app actions
Phone calls Calls from ads or from a number on your site
Offline Sales imported from your own records later

Why does the choice matter so much?

Because the platform optimises towards whatever you pick. Choose "link clicks" and you'll get cheap clicks from people who don't buy. Choose "purchases" and you'll get fewer, more expensive clicks from people who do. Same budget, completely different outcome — which is why choosing the campaign objective decides the result before the ad is even written.

How is it counted?

Google describes placing a temporary cookie when someone interacts with your ad, and recording a conversion when they later complete the action you defined. The practical consequence is that the action has to be defined and firing correctly before you spend — otherwise there's nothing to count.

Which conversion should a small business pick?

The closest one to money that happens often enough to learn from. If you get two purchases a week, optimising for purchases gives the platform almost nothing to work with — so many businesses start on a nearer action, like a message or an add-to-cart, and move up as volume grows.

Quick follow-ups

  • Not usually. A click is how someone arrives; a conversion is what they do once there. Counting clicks as success is how campaigns look busy and sell nothing.
