What is AEO (answer engine optimization), and how is it different from SEO and GEO?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, means writing and structuring your content so that search engines and AI tools use it as the direct answer to a question, not just a link in a list. It's an industry term, not an official Google product or setting, and it overlaps heavily with SEO and GEO.

How do the three compare?
| SEO | GEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aim | Rank in the list of results | Get cited inside AI answers (ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews) | Be the one direct answer |
| Typical places | Google's search results | AI chat and AI search tools | Featured snippets, voice answers, AI answers |
| Success looks like | Clicks | Mentions and citations | Your answer shown or read out |
The terms are used loosely and their meanings blur. The Google Search Central pages we checked talk about featured snippets and AI features rather than "AEO". For the other two, see what is SEO and what is generative engine optimization (GEO).
What does Google actually say?
- Featured snippets: Google's systems decide whether a page makes a good featured snippet; you can't mark a page up to become one.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations, and that existing SEO fundamentals remain worthwhile.
So AEO isn't a trick. It's good SEO with extra care for clear answers.
What does that look like on a page?
- Put the question as a heading, using the words people actually search.
- Answer it in the first one or two sentences, then explain.
- Use short lists and tables where they make things clearer.
- Keep facts accurate, sourced and up to date.
This page is built that way on purpose.
Is AEO enough to bring customers?
Not quickly. Being the answer builds trust over months; paid search brings people now. See what is SEM.
