What is content marketing, and does it work?

Content marketing is earning attention by answering the questions your customers already ask, instead of paying a platform to interrupt them. It works, but slowly — and it keeps working after you stop, which ads don't.

What counts as content marketing?

  • Answering real customer questions on your own website
  • Short videos showing how something is done
  • Before-and-after work from your own projects
  • Guides, comparisons and honest pricing pages
  • Posts that teach rather than announce

What does Google actually reward?

Google Search Central's guidance asks whether content "provides original information, reporting, research, or analysis", whether it "clearly demonstrates first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge", and whether a reader leaves satisfied. It explicitly warns against content "primarily made to attract visits from search engines", summarising others without adding value, and using extensive automation to cover many topics.

In plain terms: write what you actually know, for people who actually asked.

How does it compare to ads?

When should a business start?

Once something is already selling. Content answers the questions that come up in your sales conversations — so you need those conversations first. It also lowers ad costs over time, because Google Ads Help notes landing page quality feeds into Ad Rank.

Quick follow-ups

  • Months, not weeks. It compounds — each useful page keeps working after it's published, which is the opposite of an ad that stops the day the budget does.
