What is sales promotion, and why do marketers use it?
Sales promotion is any short-term offer that gives people a reason to buy now instead of later, like a discount, a bundle, free delivery or a limited-time deal. Marketers use it to get quick sales, bring in first-time buyers, clear old stock or bring back past customers.

What are the common types?
| Promotion | Example | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Discount | 15% off this week | Quick sales, clearing stock |
| Bundle | Buy 2, get the 3rd free | Bigger orders |
| Free delivery | Free delivery above a set amount | Online stores |
| Limited-time offer | Launch price until Thursday | Creating urgency |
If you sell on Shopify, its Help Center lists these discount types: an amount off, a percentage off, buy X get Y, and free shipping. You can give them as a code or apply them automatically at checkout.
Why does it work?
A deadline gives people a reason to decide today. Without one, "I'll think about it" often turns into never. A promotion also lowers the risk for someone buying from you for the first time.
How do I run a promotion with ads?
- Pick one clear offer. One message beats three.
- Put the offer in the first line of the ad and on the image or video.
- Give it a real end date, and keep it.
- Send people somewhere easy. A product page or a WhatsApp chat, not your homepage.
- Show it to past visitors too. They already know you and just need a push.

What should I avoid?
Fake deadlines, "was" prices that were never real, and offers you can't deliver. They damage trust faster than any promotion builds it. For raffles, prize draws or anything with special rules, check the rules that apply to you before you advertise.
