WhatsApp Business app or WhatsApp API: which do I need?
Use the free WhatsApp Business app if you, or one person, answer chats yourself. Move to the WhatsApp API (Meta calls it the WhatsApp Business Platform) when you need a team inbox, automatic replies, or messages to many customers at once. With the API, Meta charges per template message, while your replies to customers stay free.

What's the difference?
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp API | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Pay per template message sent |
| Who replies | You, on your phone | A whole team, from one inbox |
| Messaging many people | Broadcast lists of up to 256 contacts | Large campaigns with approved templates |
| Automation | Quick replies and away messages | Chatbots, CRM and website connections |
| Setup | Download the app | Through Meta or a solution provider |
The broadcast catch: with the app, only contacts who have saved your number receive your broadcasts.
How does the API pricing work?
- Per message: since 1 July 2025, Meta charges for each delivered template message.
- Charged types: marketing, utility (like order updates) and authentication (like login codes).
- Free replies: when a customer messages you, a 24-hour window opens, and your normal replies in it are free.
- Free updates: utility templates sent inside that window are also free.
- Kuwait's rates: Kuwait is priced under "Rest of Middle East", with new Kuwait-specific utility and authentication rates from 1 October 2026.
Can I keep the app?
Yes. Meta supports using the same phone number on the app and the API. Your chat history stays in sync, and messages you send from the app stay free.
Signs you've outgrown the app
- More than one person needs to answer chats
- You miss messages after working hours
- You want to message hundreds of customers who never saved your number
- You want leads from ads to land in a CRM automatically
