How do Google AI Overviews work, and why isn't my site showing?
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, and they're built from Google's regular Search index, not a separate system. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in them: a page has to be indexed, crawlable, and eligible to show a normal snippet, the same bar as ranking organically.

How do AI Overviews actually decide what to include?
Google's own documentation states plainly: "You can apply the same foundational SEO best practices for AI features as you do for Google Search overall." To appear as a supporting link, a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements." There's no special AI schema or markup Google asks for.
So why might a small business site not show up?
| Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Not ranking organically for that query at all | Check your position in normal Search results first |
Page blocked in robots.txt, or has noindex |
Test the URL in Search Console |
Snippet blocked by nosnippet or max-snippet:0 |
Check your page's meta robots tags |
| Content doesn't directly answer the question | Rewrite with a clear, early, factual answer |
| Page not indexed yet | Newer pages can take time to be crawled and indexed |
The real takeaway
If you're not appearing in AI Overviews, the honest first question is whether you rank organically for that search at all, because Google draws AI Overviews from the same eligibility bar as normal results.
