What are Google Display ads, and are they worth it?

Google Display ads are visual ads (images, logos, headlines and video) that appear on the Google Display Network: Google Ads Help says that's 35 million websites and apps, plus Google properties like YouTube and Gmail. They're worth it when you want to be seen before people start searching, or to remind past visitors, but they rarely replace Search ads for ready-to-buy customers.

How do they work?
