What is a marketing campaign, and how is an ad campaign set up?

A marketing campaign is a planned push toward one goal over a set period, for example launching a product, filling Ramadan orders or collecting leads. An ad campaign is the paid part of that push, and in Meta Ads Manager it's built in three levels: campaign, ad set and ad.

What makes something a "campaign"?

It has four things: one clear goal, a defined audience, a start and end date, and a message that ties everything together. A campaign can use several channels at once (ads, influencers, email, in-store), but they all push the same offer. Random posting without a goal or end date isn't a campaign.

How is a Meta ad campaign structured?

Meta's Business Help Centre describes three advertising levels in Ads Manager, and its training lessons explain what you set at each:

Level What you decide there
Campaign The objective (one per campaign), plus options like campaign budget and bid strategy
Ad set Audience (location, age, gender), budget and schedule, placements, and the optimisation event
Ad The creative people actually see: image or video, text, headline and call-to-action button

Think of it as a folder system. One campaign holds one or more ad sets, and each ad set holds one or more ads.

How do I set one up, step by step?

  1. Pick the objective based on what you actually want: sales, leads, messages or awareness. See which Meta campaign objective to choose.
  2. Build the ad set: who should see it, where, when and for how much. Decide whether the budget sits at campaign or ad set level.
  3. Create the ads: a few different creatives so Meta can show you what works.
  4. Publish, then leave it long enough to learn before judging.

If Ads Manager itself feels confusing, start with how to use Meta Ads Manager.

Quick follow-ups

  • Enough to compare, not so many that none get a fair chance. A few different creatives is a sensible start, then pause the weak ones once results are clear.
