What is llms.txt, and does my website need one?

llms.txt is a short Markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that tells AI tools what your business is and which pages matter most. It's cheap to add and helps AI agents, but it won't improve your Google ranking, because Google Search ignores it.

Where did llms.txt come from?

Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it on 3 September 2024 (llmstxt.org). The format is simple:

  • An H1 with your business name (the only required part)
  • A one-line summary in a quote block
  • H2 sections listing your key pages as links, each with a short note

Does Google use llms.txt?

No. Google's guide to AI features (updated 10 December 2025) says you don't need "new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

So why add one?

  1. AI agents check for it. Chrome's Lighthouse Agentic Browsing audit (Chrome 150 and later) looks for an llms.txt file at your domain root.
  2. It makes you be clear. If you can't sum up your services in five lines, your service pages probably can't either.

What should a Kuwaiti business put in it?

  • Your brand name in English and Arabic
  • What you sell and which areas you serve (for example, Kuwait City or Hawalli)
  • Links to your service, pricing and contact pages
  • How to reach you (usually WhatsApp in Kuwait)

What should come first?

Priority Task Why
1 Pages that show their text without needing JavaScript to load Every crawler can read them
2 Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt Needed to appear in ChatGPT search
3 Add llms.txt Helps agents, and it's a 15-minute job

  • No. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt, so it won't help or hurt your ranking. Its value is for AI agents and tools that read it.
