What is marketing automation, and what can a small business automate?
Marketing automation means setting up messages that send themselves when a customer does something — signs up, leaves a checkout, or messages you for the first time. For a small business, the quickest wins are welcome emails, abandoned-checkout reminders and WhatsApp greeting and away messages.

How does it work?
Every automation is a trigger plus a message. Shopify's Help Center describes its marketing automations as emails and SMS sent automatically when customers take actions in your store, such as abandoning a checkout or browsing a product. You set it up once; it keeps working.
What can I automate first?
| Automation | Trigger | Where to set it up |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome email | Someone subscribes | Shopify (Welcome new subscribers) |
| Abandoned-checkout email | Checkout started, not finished | Shopify abandoned checkout automation |
| Post-purchase email | Order placed | Shopify (Post-purchase) |
| WhatsApp greeting | First message to you | WhatsApp Business app |
| WhatsApp away message | Message outside your hours | WhatsApp Business app |
Shopify: the Help Center lists Welcome new subscribers, Post-purchase and Customer appreciation email automations, plus an abandoned-checkout automation for customers who started checking out but left. Anything custom can be built in Shopify Flow.
WhatsApp Business app: WhatsApp's Help Center explains a greeting message goes out automatically when a customer first messages you, and again after 14 days of no chat. Away messages can be set to send only outside your business hours.
What shouldn't I automate?
Automation handles the predictable moments. Complaints, custom quotes and real conversations still need a person — and an automated reply shouldn't promise a response time you can't keep.
