How do I create a new ad account on Facebook / Meta?

To create a new ad account on Meta, open Meta Business Suite, go to Settings, then Accounts, then Ad accounts, click Add and choose Create a new ad account. You enter a name, time zone and currency, pick who it's for, accept Meta's terms and add a payment method.

What are the steps?

According to Meta's Business Help Center:

  1. Go to Settings in Meta Business Suite
  2. Open Accounts, then Ad accounts
  3. Click + Add and select Create a new ad account
  4. Enter the account name, time zone and currency, then click Next
  5. Choose My business, or Another business or client if you're running ads for someone else
  6. Agree to Meta's terms and advertising standards and click Create ad account
  7. Click Add payment info, or do it later from Billing & payments

Pick the time zone and currency carefully, because your reports and bills follow them.

What do I need first?

A business portfolio (the newer name for Business Manager) where you have full control. Not sure you need one? See do I need Meta Business Manager. Creating the account costs nothing; you pay only when ads run, as explained in is a Facebook ad account free.

Why is Meta blocking me from creating one?

Meta lists three common reasons:

Reason What to do
You've hit your ad account limit Use an existing active account. Closed accounts still count toward the limit
An existing account is in bad standing Sort that account out first; see what to do when an ad account is disabled
You lack full control of the portfolio Ask someone with full control to create it

Quick follow-ups

  • Meta's help centre says new business portfolios can create only one ad account. That rises to three once a campaign delivers and a payment is made, and later limits are adjusted based on spending history.
