How should a startup do digital marketing on a small budget?
Start with the free basics, then put your small budget into one paid channel where your customers already are. Set a spending cap you can live with, measure what each dinar brings back, and only grow what works.

What can a startup set up for free first?
Before spending anything, get found and get contactable:
- Google Business Profile. Google's help centre says you can manage how your business shows on Maps and Search "at no charge", including hours, photos and replies to reviews. See Google Business Profile in Kuwait.
- WhatsApp Business app. WhatsApp describes it as free to download and built with small business owners in mind.
- One social account you post on regularly. Pick the platform your customers actually use rather than trying to be everywhere.
Where should the first paid money go?
Pick one channel and one goal. If people search for what you sell, search ads can make sense. If they discover products by scrolling, Meta, TikTok or Snapchat may fit better. Our guide to how much budget to start Meta ads walks through a starting amount.
Meta's help centre explains that a daily budget is an average, not a hard cap, while a lifetime budget is a hard cap for the whole campaign. If you're nervous about overspending, a lifetime budget gives you a fixed ceiling.
How do I know it's working?
The SBA's advice is to compare your marketing and sales costs "to the revenue it generates," and to measure consistently. In practice:
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Write down your monthly cap before you start |
| 2 | Track where every order or enquiry came from |
| 3 | After a few weeks, keep what brings customers and cut the rest |
