Do paid ads actually work for small businesses?
Yes, paid ads can work for a small business, but not automatically. They work when five things line up: the right objective, the right audience, creative people stop for, a page that makes buying easy, and tracking that shows what each result cost.

Why do paid ads work for some and not others?
Because the platform only does what you ask it to. If one of these is wrong, money leaks out:
| What has to be right | What the official guidance says |
|---|---|
| Objective | Meta says to choose the Sales objective when you want people likely to buy, and to pick a performance goal that matches your main business goal |
| Audience | Meta recommends giving its system room, for example by turning on Advantage+ detailed targeting so it can reach beyond your exact selections |
| Creative | Meta warns that showing the same image or video too often causes creative fatigue and weaker results |
| Landing page | Google Ads rates how relevant and useful your landing page is to people who click |
| Tracking | Meta's help centre says the Meta Pixel lets you measure what people do on your site after an ad |
More on each: choosing a campaign objective, what makes a good ad creative and landing pages for ads.
How long before I know?
Not after a day. Meta's best-practice page says an ad set needs around 50 optimised conversion events to exit the learning phase, and results are less stable before that. Give a test enough budget and time to reach real numbers.
When are paid ads a bad idea?
When there's no clear offer, no way to track results, or the business can't handle the enquiries that come in. Ads amplify what's already there. They can't fix a product people don't want.
How do I judge if they're worth it for me?
