What is the marketing mix (the 4 Ps)?
The marketing mix is the set of four decisions every business makes about what it sells: product, price, place and promotion. Britannica calls these the "4 Ps" and describes them as the tactics that put a marketing strategy into action.

What are the 4 Ps?
| P | The question it answers | Example for a Kuwait perfume shop |
|---|---|---|
| Product | What exactly are you offering? | Sizes, scents, gift boxes |
| Price | What will customers pay? | Regular price, bundles, launch offer |
| Place | Where and how do people buy it? | Store, website, Instagram DMs, delivery |
| Promotion | How do people hear about it and get persuaded? | Ads, influencers, content, offers |
Britannica also uses "distribution" as another name for place, and lists advertising, sales promotion, public relations and the sales force as the main tools of promotion.
Where does digital marketing fit?
Mostly in two of the Ps:
- Promotion: paid ads on Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and Google, social content, email and influencers. See the main types of online advertising.
- Place: your website, online store, WhatsApp ordering and delivery apps are all "place" when that's where the sale actually happens.
But digital data feeds the other two as well. Ad comments and search terms tell you what people want from the product, and testing offers in ads shows you how price-sensitive your buyers really are.
Why does the mix matter?
Because the four Ps have to agree with each other. A premium price with cheap-looking ads, or great ads sending people to a slow checkout, wastes money. The American Marketing Association's definition of marketing covers "creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging" offerings, which is the four Ps in one line.
